Make your own homemade Fireplace cleaner

This cleaning solution will remove soot and grime that attaches itself to the fire surround.

To make ½ a bucketful

  • 2 bars (6 ½ oz/185g each) naphtha soap
  • 5 pints/2.8 liters hot water
  • l½lb/700g powdered pumice
  • 12oz/340g household ammonia

Shave the naphtha soap into a large pot, pour in the water and heat until the soap dissolves. Remove from the heat and leave to cool. Then add the pumice and the ammonia and stir until the mixture is thoroughly combined.

To use, brush the cleaner onto sooty areas with a paintbrush and leave it to stand for about 1 hour. Then scrub it off with a stiff brush and soap or washing-up liquid. Rinse it with a sponge and clear water.
