Make your own homemade Glair

Glair is a light finish for raw wood which repels moisture, dirt and oil and is nontoxic. It is ideal for children’s toys.

To make 16 floz/450ml

  • 8 floz/225ml egg whites
  • 8 floz/225ml water
  • Pinch of sugar
  • Gum arabic

Mix the egg whites and water in a medium-size bowl, and then add the sugar. To use, brush onto the wood surface and then let it dry overnight before sanding. Apply 2 more coats, letting each dry overnight. Because glair tends to be very thin and seeps into wood easily, you might want to thicken it with gum arabic. You may have to recoat the wood occasionally, as this is not a very durable finish.
