Make your own homemade Oven & Stove cleaner

This solution works well on stoves and barbecues.

To make 16 floz/450ml

  • 2 tablespoons liquid soap or washing powder
  • 2 teaspoons borax
  • 12 floz/340ml warm water
  • 4 floz/115ml household ammonia
  • Non-chlorine scouring powder

Pour the soap, borax, water and ammonia into a 1 pint/570ml spray bottle. Shake well and then leave to stand until all the crystals have dissolved; otherwise they might clog the sprayer.

To use, put old newspapers on the floor in front of the oven. Make sure the room is well ventilated and wear rubber gloves. Spray the liquid onto the oven surface and leave for about to minutes. Spread some scouring powder on one area and rub with a wet kitchen scrubbing pad. Move around the oven surface, using more cleaner, water and scouring powder as required. For tough spots, rub with a pumice stone or scrape with a razor blade, having tested an inconspicuous area for scratching. Wipe clean with water and a sponge, or with paper towels, and dry.

Caution Check the instruction manual for your oven to check that you should use a cleaner on it. Don’t use on continuous-clean ovens or those which clean themselves.
