Make your own homemade Whitewash

Here is a recipe to make whitewash. A cheap coating that must be reapplied frequently. Excellent for farm buildings because the lime is germicidal.

For interior use only.

To make 2 gallons/9 liters

  • 5 lb/2.3kg hydrated lime
  • 6½ pints/3.7 liters water at room temperature
  • 1½ lb/700g salt
  • 1 pint/570ml warm water

In a large container, mix the lime with the room-temperature water and leave it overnight. The next day, mix the salt with the warm water and leave until dissolved. Add the salt water to the lime mixture and stir well. For coloring, add powdered pigment if desired. Store tightly covered.
